What's involved?

In collaboration with our clinic’s speech pathologist and occupational therapist, our in house creative, Monica will tailor art classes to support our students through use of visual schedules and learning supports so we can maximise our student’s involvement as they work on creating an exciting and fun art piece each term.

Term 2 saw Monica teach the skills of PRINT MAKING. Term 3 will see Monica teach the skills of MIXING COLOUR and PAINTING some Picasso style self-portraits.

At the end of the year the students will have developed a piece of work to take home. The students will also have an opportunity to showcase their art work at our very own Happy Space Art Show!

The finer details...

When? The sessions will run weekly at 4:30pm on Tuesdays for 8 sessions.

Where? 65 Droop Street Footscray

What is the cost? The sessions cost $56.25 each, which is paid in one instalment at the beginning of term of $450. There will also be a small additional cost for art supplies.

NDIS participants welcome.

How can I use my NDIS funding to cover this?

About our artist

Hi! My name is Monica.

I will be your art teacher this term! I am excited to meet you and find out what we can make in class. I like taking photos, making ceramics and prints. I recently made a painting of my birds Kiki and Bean and a print of a kookaburra - I really like birds, and all animals. I have been working as a support worker for the last 12 months and have been practising art in different forms when I can for most of my life. Gaining skills in anything takes practice, and I am glad to help you begin or continue your practice at the Happy Space.

NDIS funding

The Happy Space Allied Health is not registered as an NDIS service provider, however many of our artists use NDIS funding to access the artist workshops.  Participants who are self managing their NDIS package, or those who have a Plan Manager can use NDIS funding to attend the Artist Workshops.  There are several places in your NDIS funding package you can use your money from including Core Supports.

The Happy Space Artist Workshops can:

  • Support people with disabilities and additional needs to pursue their goals and maximise their independence.

  • Support people with disabilities and additional needs to live independently and to be included in the community as fully participating citizens.

  • Develop and support the capacity of people with disabilities and additional needs to take part in activities that allow them to participate in the community.

  • Assist participants to improve their health and wellbeing.

  • Assist participants to develop their social skills for participation in community and social activity.

  • Build a participants relationship skills and offer a range of activities and opportunities to explore wider interests and develop occupation.

At The Happy Space, we recognise and respect the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation as the traditional owners of the land on which we work, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water, and community. We pay our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and to their Elders, past, present, and emerging.

The area around Footscray was originally home to the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and the Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation for more than 40,000 years. Maribyrnong is an anglicised version of the Aboriginal term 'Mirring-gnay-bir-nong', which translates as 'I can hear a ringtail possum'.
